Butter Cream

A Year in a Montreal Pastry School

By Denise Roig

Signature Editions, 251 pages, $19

WITH TV channels devoted to food and the cult of celebrity chefs, gourmet cooking is fast becoming the latest obsession of millions. One such "foodie" is Montreal freelance journalist, writer and teacher Denise Roig.

After years of teaching journalism, she'd had her fill of students who couldn't construct a grammatical sentence. One day, she stopped at the neighbourhood store of the Pearson School of Culinary Arts and unexpectedly found herself following her passion for baking.

Published by the Winnipeg-based Signature Editions, Butter Cream is the captivating chronicle of her experiences, a memoir of her time in the kitchen learning new things -- not only about baking, but also about herself.

Like Bill Buford in his bestselling memoir Heat, Roig put her career aside to become a food writer. Then she headed back to school for a year to learn how to make pastry and desserts.

Roig lays it all out in the narrative, honestly sharing her fears about why she is there and whether this is a wise career move for her at age 56 and the oldest member of the class.

Replica watches

The hard days are very hard, forcing her to look deep within herself to try to understand her frustrations and anger: "I hate being last or weakest," she writes. "I hate not knowing what I'm doing, hate being the slowest, the oldest. I like being good at things, which is one of the reasons this pastry course is so hard on me."

Embroidered Patches

But alongside the fears and the struggles, she shares her passion for baking (beginning when she was 17) and the memories of learning from her mother, aunt and grandmother, who made the family desserts from scratch.

The book is studded with recipes, for butter cream and crme caramel, biscotti and breads. Each recipe is a link to key moment in her story, whether about the thrill of learning new ways to make old recipes, or the fear of making a new recipe the wrong way.

She bonds with many of her fellow classmates, their lives converging with hers, creating a shared experience. Some are there are there to make a career of pastry and baking, others simply to learn.

Throughout the year they come together and sometimes even tear apart, the pressure and the pace wreaking havoc on personal relationships.

There is a darker side to her story, too -- the intolerance of some toward the six Chinese students in the class and the theft of someone's gear leading to the dismissal of a classmate.

The push and pull between the instructors also create difficulties, putting the students between their teachers.

Roig writes with the passion of a devoted foodie. She describes the recipes and the resulting pastries so clearly and with such affection that one wants to run off to the bakery to pick up a few pastries.

In between, she peppers the book with snippets of her own life and history -- her background in dance, her beginnings as a writer, stories of her family and children.

In some places this works, but in others the personal tidbits can be rather jarring, as they force the reader to pause to figure out the connections.

Her writing is clipped and to the point. The short sentences evocatively ca

Alfred Hitchcock would love the Twitter headquarters here in San Francisco. Birds gathering everywhere, painted on the wall in flocks, perched on the coffee table, stitched on pillows and framed on the wall with a thought bubble asking employees to please tidy up after themselves.

cheap coach purses

In a droll nod to shifting technology, there's a British red pay telephone booth in the loftlike office that you are welcome to use but you'll have to bring in your cell phone.

I was here on a simple quest: curious to know if the inventors of Twitter were as annoying as their invention. (They're not. They're charming.)

I sat down with Biz Stone, 35, and Evan Williams, 37, and asked them to justify themselves.

ME: You say the brevity of Twitter enhances creativity. So I wonder if you can keep your answers to 140 characters, like Twitter users must. Twitter seems like telegrams without the news. We now know that on the president's trip to Trinidad, ABC News's Jake Tapper's shower was spewing brown water. Is there any thought that doesn't need to be published?

BIZ: The one I'm thinking right now.

ME: Did you know you were designing a toy for bored celebrities and high school girls?

BIZ: We definitely didn't design it for that. If they want to use it for that, it's great.

ME: I heard about a woman who tweeted her father's funeral. What ever happened to private pain?

EVAN: I have private pain every day.

ME: If you were out with a girl and she started twittering about it in the middle, would that be a deal-breaker or turn-on?

BIZ replica hublot watches (dryly): In the middle of what?

ME: Do you ever think "I don't care that my friend is having a hamburger?"

BIZ: If I said I was eating a hamburger, Evan would be surprised because I'm a vegan.

ME: What do you think about the backlash to Twitter on the blogs? Isn't that a bit like the pot calling the kettle black?

BIZ: If people are passionate about your product, whether it's because they're hating or loving it, those are both good scenarios. People can use it to help each other during fuel shortages or revolts or earthquakes or wildfires. That's the exciting part of it.

ME: Why did you think the answer to e-mail was a new kind of e- mail?

BIZ: With Twitter, it's as easy to unfollow as it is to follow.

(They're spilling past 140 now, but it must feel good to climb out of their Twitter bird cage. Evan has to leave. Biz and I continue.)

ME: Don't you get worried about being swallowed up by Google?

BIZ: They don't swallow you up. They call you up.

ME: Why did you call the company Twitter instead of Clutter?

BIZ: We had a lot of words like "Jitter" and things that reflected a hyper-nervousness. Somebody threw "Twitter" in the hat. I thought "Oh, that's the short trivial bursts of information that birds do."

ME: Oprah unleashed mayhem in the Twittersphere last week when, in her first tweet, she greeted "Twitters" instead of "Twitterers."

BIZ: I'm still kinda old-school. We're twittering, and we're all twitterers. An

SOME call them "rats with good PR" and they're widely regarded as pests, but there's no denying their charm: grey squirrels are a widespread, and largely popular, fixture in the parks and gardens of the central belt, bird food theft notwithstanding.

But these innocuous-looking creatures are now such a serious threat to the viability of Scotland's native red squirrel population that they are to be controlled with a strategic cull.

Today in Perthshire, Saving Scotland's Red Squirrels (SSRS), the first nationally coordinated attempt to save native squirrels, will be launched by environment minister Mike Russell. The threeyear project run by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, Scottish Natural Heritage, the Forestry Commission Scotland and the Scottish Rural Property and Business Association, will combine culling of grey squirrels with support for landowners in managing their woodland in red-friendly ways.

Replica watches

Grey squirrels, which were introduced in 1876 from North America, are larger than reds, out- compete them for food, breed more and have higher juvenile survival rates. They are also carriers of squirrel-pox, to which they are immune but which kills reds within 15 days of infection.

In England and Wales, the nonnative grey has pushed the red out of large areas. Scotland is home to 75per cent of the UK's remaining population, but here too red squirrel numbers have rapidly declined - there are 121,000 reds left here compared to more than 200,000 greys. Although most of the Highlands are grey-free, the Scottish Squirrel Survey in 2007 revealed reds were lost from the central belt and that greys were penetrating further, especially in the south-west; they are also found in Aberdeenshire, northern Perthshire and Angus.

Unless action is taken, supporters of the GBP1.3m project argue, the red is likely to disappear from mainland Scotland in 30 to 50 years. "The red squirrel is one of our most beautiful and valuable native species. Therefore its loss would be unforgivable, " says Mike Russell.

But not everyone agrees. The charity Advocates for Animals sees no justification for the cull, which is expected to result in the killing of thousands of greys. It opposes the culling of one species to protect another because "it is wrong to kill animals in the name of conservation" - but does not believe this project will have the desired effect anyway.

It has published the results of a poll showing that 34per cent of Scots support a grey squirrel cull, as opposed to 54per cent opposing it.

The charity's campaigns director, Ross Minett, says: "Habitat management and developing a vaccine to the squirrelpox virus are the most viable means of cherishing all our squirrels, red and grey."

Yet Stuart Brooks, director of conservation at the Scottish Wildlife Trust, says it is "disingenuous to say there are alternative solutions to saving the red squirrel". A vaccine is under development but it is "not around the corner".

Habitat improvements are a key part of the SSRS long-term strategy, but will not tackle the immediate problem. Brooks says: "This is the last point at which we can act."

The grey squirrels will be trapped and then dispatched Embroidered Patches either by lethal injection, shooting or cranial concussion. This method - where the animal is released from the trap into a hessian sack and then killed with a single blow to the back of the head - is deemed the most humane method for rodents up to 1kg of weight under the Anima

A MAN who supplied machine guns used in nine gangland murders was jailed for life yesterday - and the sentencing judge warned that the death toll caused by his weapons could rise still further.

Self-taught gunsmith Grant Wilkinson, 34, was ordered to serve a minimum term of 11 years after a jury found him guilty of running a gun factory supplying lethal Mac-10 weapons to criminals.

He adapted blank-firing replicas into live-firing guns in a garden shed in Berkshire before they were sold on and used by criminals, including the gang that killed PC Sharon Beshenivsky in Bradford.

Judge Zoe Smith, passing sentence at Reading Crown Court, said: "The scale of this criminal enterprise is unprecedented in this country. Some 30 to 40 of these weapons are still unaccounted for, and regrettably, but doubtlessly, the roll call of death and serious injury will continue to rise."

Wilkinson modified the weapons in the backyard of a derelict house which he rented out to tenants as a cover for his criminality. The guns have since been linked to 52 of the 58 Mac-10 shooting incidents since 2004, when he set up his factory.

It's a darned shame that virtually no romantic comedies are targeted at senior citizens, and it would be doubly shameful if Play the Game were the last and only time audiences got to see national treasure Andy Griffith get his flirt on.

cheap coach purses

Whenever Griffith, as a senior Lothario named Joe, waxes fondly about his romancing of the ladies at his retirement community, or about the wonders of certain little blue pharmaceuticals, the years peel from that gloriously wrinkled face and you can see clearly the winking, energetic eyes of a young sheriff from Mayberry.

And he's pretty cute, too.

Griffith's performance as randy Grandpa Joe is far and away the highlight, but far from the only charm, of Play the Game, director Marc Fienberg's comedy about the risks, joys and, sometimes, naughty little thrills to be found along the road to love.

It's far from perfect: The start is slow and weirdly generic, and for most of the film, the piece's younger couple (Paul Campbell and Marla Sokoloff) aren't nearly as interesting as Griffith and the ladies (Doris Roberts and Liz Sheridan) he's smooth-talking.

But things solidify joyfully every time Joe's on screen, which, thankfully, is a lot. We meet him as a despairing widower neglected by his selfish 20-something grandson David (Campbell), a slightly sleazy car salesman and ladies' man who bought Joe a place in the retirement community so he wouldn't have to deal with him.

But the two start to connect replica hublot watches when David takes Joe, along with his long-suffering married friend Rob (Geoffrey Owens), to be his wingman at a club while he trolls for bimbos. This provides one of the film's best scenes, when Joe, misunderstanding Rob and David's horror at him spooning Metamucil into a cup of hot water at the club, helpfully dumps a scoop into each of their cocktails.

Realizing that his grandfather needs some help on his moves, David begins coaching him in the game of love, with rules that men will recognize fondly and women will roll their eyes at. At the same time, David begins wooing perky non-bimbo Julie (The Practice's Sokoloff), but as his game starts to flounder, Joe's picks up, and the elder student becomes the teacher.

And it's that step-up in Joe's game that leads to a very funny and surprisingly suggestive sex scene between Joe and Edna (Seinfeld's Sheridan) involving lingerie, a slipped Mickey and the work of the aforementioned Viagra. The scene's slightly uncomfortable, not so much because of the age of the lovers, but because that's Matlock up there on screen marveling about his staying power.

links of london charms

Julie and David's romance is a little more paint-by-numbers.

There are thousands of romantic comedies about callow young people, but very few ... OK, none, about seniors.

One almost wishes Fienberg had dropped the kids and focused just on Griffith and his still-considerable gifts.

MUSIC lovers got the chance to see a pounds 300,000 organ in action for the first time.

A recital was held to celebrate the inauguration of the new organ in the Phipps Concert Hall at Huddersfield University.

The replica 17th century pipe organ was unveiled late last year.

But it got its first outing this week as part of a series of music events at the university.

Replica watches

It was presented to the university when Castleford businessman and organ enthusiast Michael Phipps, 72, agreed to re-home his beloved historical handcrafted organ at the new concert hall.

Mr Phipps was invited to its first concert, which featured renowned concert organist David Titterington, Professor of Organ at the Royal Academy of Music.

Dr Graham Cummings, organist of the university, said: "This particular organ is a result of Michael taking several trips to Holland and North Germany to look at and play a number of historic instruments.

"When he came back, he contacted the firm of Walkers, one of the biggest organ firms in the country, to build him a historical copy of a late-seventeenth century organ from the regions he had visited.

"He wanted it not just to sound like an historic instrument but to visibly look like one as well.

"He even engaged the wood carver who had worked on the restoration of Windsor Castle to carve pipeshades with floral designs on the instrument. In fact he spared no expense and the organ was finally completed ten years ago."

Dr Cummings said: "He is extremely passionate about the instrument and we could tell that it was a huge decision for him.

"We were very fortunate and extremely grateful that he finally decided to have the instrument brought to Huddersfield."

The organ was finished with the help of David Wood of organ builders Wood of Huddersfield.

It took two weeks to take the organ apart and to transport it to Huddersfield.

Meanwhile, to celebrate the purchase of a brand new Steinway D grand piano, the university's Department of Music has invited the celebrated pianist Martin Roscoe to perform the first recital on the new instrument.

A respected member of the conservatoire teaching establishment, Roscoe has held positions at the Royal Academy of Music and now at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

The concert takes place in the Phipps Hall at the Creative Arts Building on Monday March 16, starting at 7.30pm.

AUGUSTA -- She stood behind the shop's display window, wearing high heels, tights and a pair of waist clinchers. She stood Saturday as she's done for the last two months, looking out onto the Water Street sidewalk.

Two paces in front of Nikki Hunt, separated from her by a pane of glass, was a small group bundled against the cold. They stood with their backs to her, holding hand-made signs scribbled with their protests. They didn't know the 21-year-old Hunt by name. She didn't know them.

"They're just out there doing their thing," she said, "and we're in here doing ours."

Their "thing" was protesting against Spellbound's use of live lingerie models. Hunt's thing was modeling -- something the China native never did until now. But as the afternoon drew on, neither seemed interested in the other's thing, much less who the other was.

Spellbound owner Felicia Stockford opened her downtown shop last spring, and she's been using live models to sell the garments since September. The shop gained national attention before winter, and the ire of local conservatives shortly after.

"We don't want to have our children, or even us, exposed to this indecency," said Michael Hein during an interview Friday.

Hein, a 35-year-old Augusta native, has been credited with organizing a group called Christians Lovingly Advocating Decency. It was created in reaction to Stockford's models. But none of them -- not the models, not the group, not even Stockford and Hein -- has ever spoken to the other side in person.

"He's made this too personal for me to think we could talk or get anything meaningful from this," Stockford said from inside her shop during Saturday's protest.

Hein admitted that he would be willing to speak with Stockford, but only when she's ready to admit that she's wrong.

"If she's interested in doing that," he said while standing replica breitling watches on the cold, shady sidewalk, "then there would be an appropriate forum."

So there they stood -- Stockford and her models looking out, Hein and his supporters looking in.

The protest, which Hein referred to as a "prayer vigil," began Saturday with a group of six gathered in front of the store at 10:30 a.m. An hour later, that number dwindled to two: Hein and the Rev. Mike Panosian of Moriah Ministries International in Augusta. When young women from Archenemy, a shop across the street, started modeling underwear and pink, fishnet bodysuits from their store window, Panosian decided to cross traffic and stand in front of it, alone.

"One person can change a whole community," Panosian said, believing the strength of sentiment more important than the strength of numbers. "That's how Jesus did it."

By noon, the intersection of Water and Bridge streets was more populated with news media representatives than shoppers and protesters. Cameramen meandered back and forth between the stores, through traffic when it stopped for a red light, and periodically someone uninvolved with the exhibition would walk by.

"It's gonna put Augusta on the map," said passer-by Yvonne Patenaude. "Whoopee!"

Francis McLean of Augusta, who said he'd "like to think" he was a Christian, didn't understand what all the excitement was about.

"A beautiful woman is not a sin," he said. "We're all made to look the way w

IT could not, by any stretch of the bra strap, be described as pretty.

But this unusual bra could become the most popular precious nothing in your lingerie drawer.

La Decollette, as it is called, claims to banish Replica watches the wrinkles left on a woman's cleavage when she sleeps on her side.

Advancing years and a touch too much sun can also play havoc with a smooth decolletage.

Rachel de Boer, the Dutch designer behind the bra, explained it provided a layer of cushioning between the breasts to prevent them squeezing together, the cause of vertical wrinkles in the cleavage. Miss de Boer has been selling the [pounds sterling]45 bra in her home country since October last year.

She has now made it available to other European countries, including Britain, via her website, and hopes to sell it in High Street stores if it takes off. Yesterday she said she hit upon the idea after spotting wrinkles in her skin in Embroidered Patches her early 30s - a legacy of sun worshipping on beaches during her days as an air hostess.

'There are plenty of sexy bras out there and this is not a sexy bra, but it can help you get your sexy cleavage back,' she said.

'The vertical wrinkles appear because the breasts are pressed against each other while sleeping.

'The older you get, the longer it takes before they disappear again. 'Sometimes they won't disappear at all.' She said she came up with La Decollette after a friend suggested sleeping with a cushion between her breasts.

'It wasn't practical but I did notice a difference', Miss de Boer added. 'La Decollette works in exactly the same way by keeping your breasts apart while you sleep and allowing your skin to recover from the wrinkles.' The bra, which is made of Lycra and comes in white or black, fastens at the back. It has no cups but a cushioned section which fits in the middle of the chest and is filled with a synthetic, anti-allergenic fibre sometimes found in pillows and duvets.

Straps can be adjusted to fit a bust between 30 and 42 inches.

Miss de Boer said that although the bra was designed with the more mature woman in mind, many customers were under 30.

Lingerie expert Gillian Proctor was sceptical as to the benefits.

She said: 'The purpose of a bra is to support and control the breast.

JANUARY

The year starts off with a "CEO firerama," as CNBC commentator lames Cramer calls it. Among those losing their positions: CEOs of Starbucks, Krispy Kreme, Bear Stearns, and Sears.

The U.S. Supreme Court, in its Stoneridge ruling, affirms that investors cannot sue third parties such as banks, accountants, suppliers, law firms, and other businesses that had dealings with companies accused of securities fraud.

Activists on the move early: Companies getting their year started with investor agitation include Comcast Corp., Charming Shoppes Inc., CNET Networks Inc., New York Times Co. (a hedge fund nominates four candidates to its board), and Zales Corp. (which gave up without a fight, giving Richard Breeden, one of 2007's bigfoot activists, two seats on its board).

Backdating still making news: Gregory Reyes, the former CEO of Brocade Communications Systems Inc., is sentenced to 21 months in prison and fined $15 million for "orchestrating a scheme to tamper with the company's records of stock option grants," as the Associated cheap coach purses Press (AP) reports.

The CFA Institute Centre for Financial Markets Integrity petitions the SEC to improve executive compensation disclosure rules; the CFA's 10-point proposal includes clarifying the role company CEOs play in determining their own compensation.

"All hell's going to break loose" when an advisory panel to the SEC issues its recommendations later in the year for changes in U.S. accounting and financial reporting, predicts the panel's leader, Robert Pozen, chairman of MFS Investment Management Co. The panel is studying how to reduce complexity and make corporate results more comparable from industry to industry.

Rapid growth experienced by the International Corporate Governance Network leads to the appointment of Kerrie Waring in the newly created position of chief operating officer for the organization, whose membership at the start of 2008 encompasses 40 countries.

Board diversity: January 1 is the deadline for every publicly traded company in Norway to comply with a 2003 law requiring them to have a certain number of women on their board--a law that has led to nearly 40% of Norwegian corporate directors being women.

No stigma: Stanley O'Neal, ousted in October 2007 as CEO of Merrill Lynch amidst massive tosses in mortgage-related instruments, is elected to the board of Alcoa Inc.

Woes begin for Yahoo board: On the last day of the month, Microsoft makes a big move--placing "a bold $44.6 billion bet that buying Yahoo can transform both companies' flagging efforts to catch Google Inc.," per the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

FEBRUARY

Smaller companies get another reprieve from the SEC on some of the more onerous SOX financial reporting controls.

A survey by Thomson Financial finds only a tiny percentage of public companies are planning to create electronic shareholder forums, even though the SEC lightened up this month on its Web disclosure rules to remove some of the liability issues that had everyone concerned about communicating with shareholders online.

Early read on activism: FactSet Shark-Watch reports 72 campaigns waged by activists as of early February--a pace indicating investor opposition will beat 2007's record level of activity. More than half of the campaigns are initiated by hedge funds.

Catherine Agnes Martyak, 90, "Irish eyes always smiling," was full of wit and energy her entire life. Her sparkle Replica watches flickered out as she died peacefully in her sleep on Feb. 19 in Maine.

Just weeks away from being 91, she insisted she neither felt it nor looked it. Mrs. Martyak died in a hospital in Augusta with one son and her daughter nearby. Her death was the result of natural causes due to age.

Catherine Agnes Cranston was born in Chester on March 15, 1918. Born on the Ides of March, everyone soon learned to "beware," or certainly to be aware, of her charm and sense of humor.

Her father, Bartley Cranston, a quiet-spoken Scotsman, worked in the oil refineries of Marcus Hook. Her Irish mother, Bridget "Bridie" O'Malley Cranston, was active her entire life in their parish church, Holy Savior. Throughout her life, Catherine always held a very deep sibling affection for her younger brother, Bartley.

After attending West Philadelphia Catholic School for Girls, Catherine earned her nursing degree at Philadelphia's Misericordia Hospital, where she met the man of her dreams making eyes at her over a surgeon's mask in the operating room. A hot ticket with red hair and dancing feet that would not stop, she married Gabriel Stephen Martyak, Embroidered Patches M.D., on Nov. 27, 1941, knowing it had to be true love since he would not and could not dance.

While Gabe then served overseas as a major in the Army Medical Corps during World War II, "Kit," with her new nickname, served as a nurse on the New York/Florida sterling Silver Meteor sleeper train. She charmed conductors to slow the train whenever it passed through Marcus Hook so she could wave to her new son in the care of her parents.

After the war, Gabe and Kit moved to Freeland where they set up house, set up a medical practice and set in motion a family of doctors and lawyers. They contributed countless good works to the community, caring for patients and causes, all the while raising their family of five children.

After 58 marital years of doting affection, Gabe died in 2000. For nine additional years, Kit freely dispensed her Irish insights, finished daily crossword puzzles, and practiced her unwavering Catholic faith.

She is survived by four sons, a daughter and a daughter-in-law: Stephen N. Martyak, M.D., J.D.; Gabriel G. Martyak, D.O., MBA; Joseph J. Martyak, J.D.; Stephanie M. Martyak, D.O., and Bartholomew A. Martyak, M.D. (wife Katie). Her 11 grandchildren (and spouses) are Christina (Joseph Curl), Stephanie (Damon Moss), Stephen (Stacy), Gregg, Megan (Josh Zwick), Carrie, Jonathan, Winston, Marisa, Patrick and Julia. Her five great-grandchildren are John, Lauren, Emily, Benjamin and Bodie Max.

A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on April 4 at Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church, 820 Centre St., Freeland.

Omega Fake

In lieu of flowers, memorial gestures can be sent to Howell House, a Catholic assisted-living home, 44 Sewall St., Augusta, ME 04330.

Devoted to their faith, family, friends, and, foremost, each other, Kit and Gabe led an enviable life based on indefatigable love, thus proving the best partner for the dance of life is someone who loves someone from head to toe, respecting the first part and not stepping on the second.

A tower of decadent truffles -- or a box of conversation hearts? Twelve red roses -- or just six, with extra filler to make the vase appear full?

Will love conquer the economy this Valentine's Day?

Florists, candy stores, restaurateurs and jewelers hope so, but they're not taking any chances. By pumping up marketing and discounting flowers, jewelry and lingerie, they're trying to entice love-struck consumers who still are hunting for the perfect gifts for their valentine. And because Valentine's Day shoppers are notoriously last minute, retailers have a small window of time.

National reports point to a Feb. 14 when people will spend less on love. Consumers will shell out about $102.50 each on valentine gifts, down from $122.98 last year, according to a National Retail Federation survey.

This kind of outlook led a local candy and greeting card store, Chocolatepaper, to beef up advertising this year. The retailer, which has two Roanoke Replica Bally Handbags Valley locations, has promoted its gourmet goodies through several media recently, including a chocolate tasting event and a giveaway on a radio station.

"We know this year people are skittish," said Melissa Palmer, an owner of Chocolatepaper. "We are advertising because we want our customers to know that we have an affordable indulgence."

The store's chocolate prices remain the same as last year, with heart-shaped truffles for as little as $1.75 and $100 lovers baskets piled with sauces, truffles and a chocolate thong.

For Valentine's Day, the price of wholesale flowers triples because of increased demand. George's Flowers in Roanoke typically passes the added cost to customers through slightly higher flower prices each year.

book printing But this year, George Clements, owner of the store, did not increase prices for certain arrangements, knowing that consumers' budgets are tight.

Clements also has low expectations for this year's valentine sales. Sales have been down since March. Usually the Valentine's Day period is one of the florist's busiest of the year.

"We have purposely bought less product, knowing that we would see a drop in business," Clements said.

Still, the phones are ringing and at least six George's employees in assembly-line style filled clear vases with dark red roses, baby's breath and greenery this week inside the company's warehouse on Franklin Road. It's too early to tell how this year's valentine sales will compare with 2008, Clements said. On Saturday, he'll keep the floral shop open four hours longer, until 4 p.m., for last- minute shoppers.

Already, flower orders are down from last year at Stritesky's Flower Shop in Roanoke County. Most years, the florist has double the number of orders that it had as of Tuesday, said co-owner Jean Stritesky.

She blamed the slowdown on the sluggish pace of consumer spending and competition from grocery stores that sell fresh flowers.

"The economy is affecting everything, and definitely flower sales," Stritesky said.

Still, when Feb. 14 lands on a Saturday, it doesn't help the floral business, Clements said. Often people head out of town for the weekend without making a local flower purchase, he said.

Plus, the big day for flower deliveries moves to the Friday before the holiday. Local florists say

MOTORISTS were stunned as a 13ft high and 30ft long TRex made its way down the A380 and into Torquay yesterday.

But nothing was damaged as the massive monster trampled its way into town -- the gigantic dinosaur was a life-size replica of the famous beast and is helping renowned fundraiser Lloyd Scott in his latest charity appeal.

Once in Torquay the lethal lizard was lurking among the Bay's prizewinning floral beds in Princess Gardens.

He famously completed the London Marathon in a deep sea diving suit as well as a staggering 32 other fundraising events including multiple marathons, trekking the Inca Trail and cycling a penny farthing 3,000 miles across Australia.

Lloyd aims to walk the length of the UK in 70 days, including 20 days of dedicated fundraising stops.

As he arrived in Torquay he was 145 miles into the walk and today sets off on the next leg of his journey from Exeter.

Speaking as crowds gawped at his oversized walking buddy, Lloyd said: "The reception in Torquay has been amazing, absolutely fantastic.

"The children are especially fascinated by the dinosaur.

"I am having a lovely relaxing Sunday afternoon. I am very much enjoying myself. It is what I needed after a long week walking and fundraising."

He added: "I am hoping to raise between Pounds 500 and Pounds 1,000 today for the Teenage Cancer Trust."

Lloyd added: "Teenage Cancer Trust is a charity very close to my replica breitling watches heart having survived leukaemia at a young age.

"I spent my time in hospital with elderly cancer patients who were dying.

"I had no one my age to talk to who understood what I was going through. Thanks to the charity, young people today can be treated in units that are a world away from what I experienced. They aren't like ordinary hospital wards."

The Beatles had it right. Love really is all you need. Well, that and food.

But on Valentine's Day, it couldn't hurt to back up that love with a few tokens of affection.

I'm not talking about flowers and chocolate. Not that these are bad ideas, but a little something extra is always nice. And frankly, I think lingerie is a potential minefield. If you buy a size too big, consider the evening over. If you buy a size too small, that's no fun either.

If ever you're going to show your creative side, now is the time. I've included a few heart-happy gift ideas, but only you know your true love's desires (and if you don't, you should be reading Dear Abby instead of ShopGirl). So be creative. Be bold. Be amorous.

And take some encouragement from the Beatles: "There's nothing you can do that can't be done."

It's easy.

Isle love you

I may be biased here, but the Irish really know what they're doing when it comes to love. And if the jewelry at Celtic Rainbow Gifts in Ellsworth is any indication, so do the Scots and the Welsh. Celtic Rainbow has modern riffs on the traditional Claddagh symbol (sterling men's ring, $138.99; pendant, $78.99). But what really caught my eye were the Welsh lovespoons, which originated as a courting custom. According to legend, a man would carve a small spoon out of wood, and if she accepted, it was taken as a token of betrothal and secretly worn on a ribbon around her neck. In fact, the Welsh word for lover is still "sponer," meaning "spooner." The silver version is an elegant alternative to wood ($62.99). Another not-so-well-known symbol is the Scottish Luckenbooth, a heart- shaped brooch topped with the crown of Mary, Queen of Scots. Traditionally, the pins were exchanged as an engagement token, and later, a couple would pin the Luckenbooth to their baby's shawl to ward off evil spirits. ($29.99).

Under lock and key

Present the key to your heart - or, just give your Valentine a place to hang the car keys - in this pretty wooden case. Of course, it would be perfect for necklaces, too ($18.95 at Ingrid's German Gift Shop in Bangor).

Hot stuff

This is the perfect gift for your devilish little sister (or best friend). The mug says it all. ($12.50 at The Grasshopper Shop).

What's cookin?

Nothing says lovin' like sweets in the oven. Give your sweetie some inspiration with these cookie cutters and spatula ($1.50 for the heart, $2 for X-and-O set, $6.50 for spatula, all at Rooster Brother in Ellsworth).
