Can a road ever be broad enough or perfect enough that it would meet all expectations? Those working and living on St John's Church Road do not think so.

The stretch from Coles Park to Sepping's Road junction was broadened just five years ago. And, today, it is back to square one. Cars line up during rush hour on this spacious stretch. All the chaos just dies down a couple of hours after the children in the various schools around are safely inside and all the office-goers have reached their workplaces.

Add a couple of lanes more to this stretch, the chaos will still be a regular feature twice a day during peak hours, residents and businessmen say. Red marks left behind by the BBMP and the notices they distributed recently have left the residents and shop owners confused.

Information is hard to come by. BBMP engineers are not clear about what they intend to do and when. "Whatever is done should be done for the benefit of the public also. It is important to add the word 'also' because it is not clear why this project is being implemented," says Khaleel Ahmed, a businessman who has been running a repair shop here for 30 years.

It is no surprise that those who stand to lose their livelihood and ties with this place are confused. "The BBMP engineers did not say when this would be done. It may take a year, it may take two years, according to them," says G Babu, an employee at a car sales office.

"Nobody has got the exact measurement. I have spoken to the AEE but have got no answers," says Mohammed Javeed, an entrepreneur. Javeed, who settled down here in the 1980s and owns a house here, is being asked to give up part of his parking space and shops he rents out in exchange for transfer of development rights. But he does not want "a paper that can be read like a newspaper and thrown out".

What is the point of having TDR when people construct as many floors as they want, flouting rules and permissions? In a land where law is not implemented, such options are of little value, he says. "Beggars cannot be choosers in a city where citizens are being reduced to beggars," he adds.

TDR could benefit those who have the land or sturdy building to build further, says M Suleman Sharief, Congress president of Shivajinagar Block. Sharief, who owns a wedding hall, part of which could be acquired by BBMP for its project, dismisses TDR as an option for the many small-land holders.

"But that's not the point we should be debating over," he says. "We need flyovers or overbridges to allow traffic to pass the junction. Broadening the road, demolishing houses, and uprooting people is not the way to do anything," he says.

Restaurateur Rana Sikander too suggests that an underpass at the Haine's Road and St John's Church Road junction and a flyover connecting to Cantonment Station will give much relief to commuters.

Venkatesh VS, proprietor of a shop here, is open to an elevated road being built here although his business may suffer during the construction. "In the long run, that's the only permanent solution. Traffic can move on both roads. Exit roads can be provided every couple of kilometres. Businessmen at the ground level can continue as usual," he says.

Venkatesh has strong reasons for backing this solution which he says has already been proposed by the government. "This is one of the major link roads that connect north and west of the city to the south and the east. In fact, it is called the Inner Core Ring Road. The other roReplica Watches

KENSINGTON and Chelsea's decision to approve a new five-storey retail and residential complex on Portobello Road is bad enough in itself -- but following another recent controversial planning decision on the road, it suggests that the council has lost touch with the area's needs. The a ntique shops and stalls of the road are a major tourist attraction Cartier Handbags and a significant part of the local micro- economy. Already the street's unique character has been diminished with the conversion of a lively antiques arcade to a chain store. The latest planned development would be even worse.

The decision was replica omega watches taken in the face of vocal protests from residents and traders. All the planning officer could do was reiterate that the council was powerless to protect a specific type of shop or stall.

One wonders what the point of planning officers is if they cannot protect the character of a street like this. These busy bureaucrats are extraordinarily interventionist when it comes to small residential planning proposals, yet can only protest their impotence in Womens sandals the case of big commercial developments. Why do councillors and planners not call the developers' bluff and, for once, fulfil the express wishes of the people who voted for them? Kensington and Chelsea has been a poor custodian of this London gem; the council should think again.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government yesterday said it was working on comprehensive solutions to the increasing number of homeless and abandoned children.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said the setting up of numerous shelters by the ministry should not be seen as the only solution.

"Shelters are not prisons and we cannot force the children to stay there," she said, adding that the ministry had already started working with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to tackle the problem.

The NGOs, she said, had identified areas attracting a high number of homeless and abandoned children, such as Bandar Baru Sentul, Ampang and Bukit Bintang here.

Furla Fake Handbags "They also help us identify the specific needs of each child and whether he or she should be placed in a shelter. There is no way we can work alone on such a grave matter," she said in dismissing claims that the ministry was not working with NGOs to combat the problem.

Shahrizat was commenting on a New Sunday Times expose on hundreds of street children living in abandoned buildings in the city.

Following interviews with some of these children, it was revealed that they roamed the streets, committed robberies and even prostituted themselves to survive.

The report also received the attention of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who said in Kota Kinabalu yesterday that the government would have to look deeper into the matter.

"We need to check on this. We need to find out who these children are, whether they are locals or if they are children of those who are not from here," he said.

A Scottish expatriate, Jill McWilliams, who has been involved with street children here, accused the ministry of having a lackadaisical attitude.

In stressing that the ministry was working overtime to tackle the problem, Shahrizat said it was now piloting the Kuala Lumpur Krash Pad (KLKP) programme to help teenagers rado replica watches in Chow Kit by providing them a safe place to stay and instilling positive values.

She said the decision to focus on Chow Kit was because the area had been identified as a hotbed for homeless children. To date, KLKP had registered 350 teenagers.

Shahrizat said the ministry provided two types of shelters - one for "care and protection" and the other for "rehabilitation".

Young victims of abuse, neglect and abandonment would be placed in a "care and protection" shelter. Children involved in criminal activities and high-risk behaviours such as drug abuse would be placed in "rehabitation" shelters.

There are 12 "care and protection" shelters nationwide with 10 supervised by the Federal Government and two by the Johor and Sarawak gover nments.

Twenty-four "rehabilitation" centres were provided through various institutions like Sekolah Tunas Bakti (9), Taman Seri Puteri (4) and Asrama Akhlak (11).

She said the ministry was also working with various NGOs, namely Yayasan Salam, PS The Children, Shelter Home, Malaysian AIDS Council and PT Foundation.

On the problem of foreign children, Shahrizat said this could only be resolved through the help of the Immigration Department.

1950 CENTRE-HALF Sally Eades became a national heroine when her team defied a "sex ban" imposed by the Essex County Football Association.

The FA fuddy-duddies banned Chelmsford Ladies' football team playing on approved grounds and stopped its own members from associating with them.

Sally, who became mother-oftwo Mrs Ketley, recalled the event in an interview in the Chronicle in 1988.

She said: "Thanks to the ban everyone in the country heard about our team.

"We were featured in national newspapers and we attracted upwards of 5,000 spectators, especially after the notoriety we received in the media."

Sally went to see Essex Chronicle editor Rae Handley and asked him to put out a story appealing for women to join her team.

"We had so many replies we formed two sides for the 1950-51 season," said Sally, who admitted that local lads were attracted like bees around a honey pot.

"I don't think they were too interested in soccer, but they did take a fancy to our goalkeeper."

Mr Handley fully supported her team, penning this hard-hitting comment: "When the Essex County Football Association forced Crompton Parkinsons (a Chelmsford firm) by a 50-year-old rule to ban the Chelmsford v Maldon soccer match on their ground, they were carrying a stage further the absurd fight against this form of women's sports.

"Why are the FA so dead set against these girls? In my opinion there is only one real explanation.

"They are scared. And money is at the back of it.

"When Chelmsford girls played against Burnham at Admiral's Park ground recently on a Sunday 2,500 people attended.

"During Chelmsford Carnival Week 5,000 watched the Maldon- Burnham game. Pounds 100 was taken at the gate.

"Now 5,000, it must be remembered, is the average figure for a Chelmsford City first team game. Imagine what would happen to the professionals' gates all over the country if the women started playing on Saturday after noons.

"That is what scares the FA".

Happily in today's enlightened soccer world women's football is thriving.

Chelmsford City Ladies Football Club caters for girls and women from the age of seven.

The team is always on the lookout for new players. For details contact club secretary Dawn Barnard 01245 284377.

Chronicle supported uprising THE rise in popularity of watching women footballers in action was covered extensively by the Essex Chronicle.

No less a figure than WT Spurgeon, secretary of Chelmsford & Mid Essex League, told its annual dinner in 1950 of his "anger".

He was more than miffed that their matches were attracting huge crowds, while male teams could only draw a handful of onlookers.

Mr Spurgeon hit out: "It angers me that a crowd of 1,200 can watch 22 young ladies kicking a ball about.

"I am dead against ladies' soccer, the standard they are said to play passes comprehension."

But club treasurer Sid Johnson defended women players, saying "I don't see why ladies shouldn't play football, ladies are very adaptable these days."

Products by Oklahoma City-based manufacturer Kimray are used worldwide, but mostly on stationary objects, like oil wells.

But one product is on board the world's only high-altitude train, providing fresh air to occupants traveling in mountains that are more than three miles high.

The 4-by-8-inch valve is used on the fresh air-oxygen system for the Qinghai-Tibet train, also known as the Lhasa Express or Sky Train in China.

Tory burch sale

The train crosses 1,215 miles and reaches its highest point at Tanggula Pass, an altitude of 16,640 feet. The train passes Qinghai Lake, China's largest lake, and Fenghuoshan, the world's highest railroad tunnel at 16,093 feet. More than 80 percent of the journey is at an altitude of 13,000 feet or higher. Half of the rail line is built on permafrost.

Kimray became acquainted with the Chinese government and the high- altitude train through trade shows and sales calls, said Chris Watkins, international sales director.

"Many engineering firms in China are familiar with Kimray through the shows," Watkins said.

Also, the company was able to introduce itself by calls made by a distributor and the Kimray Chinese website , Watkins said.

"When the Chinese needed a small 1-inch valve, Kimray had the solution," Watkins said. "Not only could we handle the application, we could do so with a very small footprint."

Kimray might be best known for working with engineering firms in the oil and gas industry, but it works with firms in other industries as well, using its distributor Ameritech Scientific in Beijing and Tianjin, Watkins said.

Ferragamo Shoes

"Kimray may be known as the 'king of the patch,' but we get involved in many special non-oil and gas projects both in the U.S. and around the world," Watkins said.

The valve on the Sky Train, used in the complex ventilation system, draws in air and releases nitrogen while oxygen is pumped in the compartments, Watkins said.

"Our valve is a pressure-reducing valve that cuts a higher pressure down to a lower, more manageable pressure. It is used on the air and nitrogen side of the system," Watkins said.

The same valve that Kimray started with in 1948 is a precursor to the valve the company uses in China today, Watkins said.

"Only smaller," Watkins said.

While Watkins declined to disclose specific financial details of the contract, he said the government changes out all the valves with new ones as part of a preventive maintenance program.

"We have been furnishing, through our distributor, about 125 units per year," he said.

Privately operated Kimray, which was founded in 1948, reports annual sales of about $90 million, according to its website. Watkins said sales increased more than 20 percent annually from 2004 through 2008. The economic downturn, beginning in 2009, impacted sales, which declined from 2008 levels.

To date in this year, sales are up over 2009 levels at this time.

Kimray has 540 employees throughout the U.S., with 440 in Oklahoma City. The remaining staff is in Kimray-owned stores along the Gulf Coast, California and Pennsylvania.

The event was a reward for students from Kettering and Moraine who participated in a reader incentive program, according to school librarian Pam Fortener.

The Kettering Fairmont High School jazz band played When the Saints Go Marching In while kids danced into the gym. Many of the students made and wore colorful masks decorated with sequins and feathers. Teachers wore feather boas and funny hats and threw beads at the students as they walked down Bourbon Street.

Fortener congratulated the students, saying that they had read a total of 187,627 minutes in 2 months, which equaled 131 days of nonstop reading. Students logged and turned in the hours they spent reading at home and at school.

The Lakers played 82games to get to this point, but they were merely a warmup for what's to come. They won 65 games, but they were nothing more than a tuneup. They earned the No.1 seed in the Western Conference, but that's meaningless now.

No question, the Lakers will be favored to defeat the Utah Jazz handily in the best-of-7, opening round series and advance to the next round. The Lakers might not drop a game. They might not drop a bead of sweat, either.

Expectations of the Lakers have been enormous.

The Lakers agreed the bar has been set high. After all, they are the ones to help put it there, with their play and their words. They told everyone who would listen they expected to return to the NBA Finals - and to win.

They know they must win 16 games to claim the championship that eluded them when they lost to the Boston Celtics last June. They know they must not waver in their task, fixing their gaze on the prize they believe is within their reach.

"No, not nervous, just excited," Pau Gasol said. "We feel more confident. Last year, we had a great run, but everything was just kind of happening. This year, we kind of expect to be out there and to be successful

and to move along and to get to our goal."

First, they must clear a formidable hurdle in the Jazz, a team many expected to finish higher than eighth in the conference. Injuries to key players, including Carlos Boozer and Deron Williams, sent it tumbling to the back of the playoff pack.

Boozer sat out 44 games because of injuries to his left quadriceps and left knee and Williams was sidelined pandora glass beads for 13 games because of a sprained left ankle. Utah went 25-19 in Boozer's absence and 8-5 while Williams was injured.

Utah finished with a 48-34 record, including 15-26 on the road, the worst record of any team in the Western Conference playoffs. The Jazz finished 17 games behind the Lakers (65-17), who were a league- best 29-12 away from home.

The home-road disparity has troubled the Jazz all season.

"We go to Salt Lake City and it's like we're on a whole other planet," Boozer said during a recent television interview. "We play fast, we play great (defense), we're active.

"We're a very good home team. We've been trying to bottle that energy and that play and bring it to wherever we go and we haven't quite figured it out yet."

The Jazz's road struggles lead many observers to believe the Lakers will make quick work of the Jazz and move ahead to face the winner of the series between the fourth-seeded Portland Trail Blazers and the fifth-seeded Houston Rockets.

Utah coach Jerry Sloan all but counted his team out after the Lakers handled the Jazz with remarkable ease during the second half of the regular-season finale. Sloan startled reporters by saying after the Lakers' 125-112 victory:

"We didn't give much of a battle and knowing that we're going to have to play them again, it looks pretty bleak. Hate to say that, but it's one of those things."

Lakers coach Phil Jackson declined to agree with Sloan, a fellow Hall of Famer.

"I want them to be excited about it," Jackson said of the Lakers. "I'm a little concerned because Sloan has kind of downplayed their chances. We don't want

After years of teaching journalism, she'd had her fill of students who couldn't construct a grammatical sentence. One day, she stopped at the neighbourhood store of the Pearson School of Culinary Arts and unexpectedly found herself following her passion for baking.

Published by the Winnipeg-based Signature Editions, Butter Cream is the captivating chronicle of her experiences, a memoir of her time in the kitchen learning new things -- not only about baking, but also about herself.

Like Bill Buford in his bestselling memoir Heat, Roig put her career aside to become a food writer. Then she headed back to school for a year to learn how to make pastry and desserts.

Roig lays it all out in the narrative, honestly sharing her fears about why she is there and whether this is a wise career move for her at age 56 and the oldest member of the class.

The hard days are very hard, forcing her to look deep within herself to try to understand her frustrations and anger: "I hate being last or weakest," she writes. "I hate not knowing what I'm doing, hate being the slowest, the oldest. I like being good at things, which is one of the reasons this pastry course is so hard on me."

But alongside the fears and the struggles, she shares her passion for baking (beginning when she was 17) and the memories of learning from her mother, aunt and grandmother, who made the family desserts from scratch.

The book is studded with recipes, for butter cream and crme caramel, biscotti and breads. Each recipe is a link to key moment in her story, whether about the thrill of learning new ways to make old recipes, or the fear of making a new recipe the wrong way.

She bonds with many of her fellow classmates, their lives converging with hers, creating a shared experience. Some are there are there to make a career of pastry and baking, others simply to learn.

Throughout the year they come together and sometimes even tear apart, the pressure and the pace wreaking havoc on personal relationships.

There is a darker side to her story, too -- the intolerance of some toward the six Chinese students in the class and the theft of someone's gear leading to the dismissal of a classmate.

The push and pull between the instructors also create difficulties, putting the students between their teachers.

Roig writes with the passion of a devoted foodie. She describes the recipes and the resulting pastries so clearly and with such affection that one wants to run off to the bakery to pick up a few pastries.

In between, she peppers the book with snippets of her own life and history -- her background in dance, her beginnings as a writer, stories of her family and children.

In some places this works, but in others the personal tidbits can be rather jarring, as they force the reader to pause to figure out the connections.

Her writing is clipped and to the point. The short sentences evocatively ca

"The ship is the only one of its type sailing in the world but is similar in style to the ships of Drake's period.

Alfred Hitchcock would love the Twitter headquarters here in San Francisco. Birds gathering everywhere, painted on the wall in flocks, perched on the coffee table, stitched on pillows and framed on the wall with a thought bubble asking employees to please tidy up after themselves.

In a droll nod to shifting technology, there's a British red pay telephone booth in the loftlike office that you are welcome to use but you'll have to bring in your cell phone.

I was here on a simple quest: curious to know if the inventors of Twitter were as annoying as their invention. (They're not. They're charming.)

I sat down with Biz Stone, 35, and Evan Williams, 37, and asked them to justify themselves.

ME: You say the brevity of Twitter enhances creativity. So I wonder if you can keep your answers to 140 characters, like Twitter users must. Twitter seems like telegrams without the news. We now know that on the president's trip to Trinidad, ABC News's Jake Tapper's shower was spewing brown water. Is there any thought that doesn't need to be published?

BIZ: The one I'm thinking right now.

ME: Did you know you were designing a toy for bored celebrities and high school girls?

BIZ: We definitely didn't design it for that. If they want to use it for that, it's great.

ME: I heard about a woman who tweeted her father's funeral. What ever happened to private pain?

EVAN: I have private pain every day.

ME: If you were out with a girl and she started twittering about it in the middle, would that be a deal-breaker or turn-on?

BIZ replica hublot watches (dryly): In the middle of what?

ME: Do you ever think "I don't care that my friend is having a hamburger?"

BIZ: If I said I was eating a hamburger, Evan would be surprised because I'm a vegan.

ME: What do you think about the backlash to Twitter on the blogs? Isn't that a bit like the pot calling the kettle black?

BIZ: If people are passionate about your product, whether it's because they're hating or loving it, those are both good scenarios. People can use it to help each other during fuel shortages or revolts or earthquakes or wildfires. That's the exciting part of it.

ME: Why did you think the answer to e-mail was a new kind of e- mail?

BIZ: With Twitter, it's as easy to unfollow as it is to follow.

(They're spilling past 140 now, but it must feel good to climb out of their Twitter bird cage. Evan has to leave. Biz and I continue.)

ME: Don't you get worried about being swallowed up by Google?

BIZ: They don't swallow you up. They call you up.

ME: Why did you call the company Twitter instead of Clutter?

BIZ: We had a lot of words like "Jitter" and things that reflected a hyper-nervousness. Somebody threw "Twitter" in the hat. I thought "Oh, that's the short trivial bursts of information that birds do."

ME: Oprah unleashed mayhem in the Twittersphere last week when, in her first tweet, she greeted "Twitters" instead of "Twitterers."

BIZ: I'm still kinda old-school. We're twittering, and we're all twitterers. An

In the latest edition of Full & By, the newsletter of the Maritime Museum of San Diego, we learned that its three vessels constitute the largest single collection of tall ships in the world. The Star of India is the oldest active ship in the world (a fact of which the musuem is proud), is a National and State Historical cheap coach purses landmark, and is listed in the World Ship Trust. The bark is ported in San Diego with her sister tall ships, HMS Surprise, replica of a mid-18th century Royal Navy frigate, and California, replica of an 1847 revenue cutter, which was the first revenue cutter assigned to the area. In 2003, she was designated as the official tail ship of the State of California.

SOME call them "rats with good PR" and they're widely regarded as pests, but there's no denying their charm: grey squirrels are a widespread, and largely popular, fixture in the parks and gardens of the central belt, bird food theft notwithstanding.

But these innocuous-looking creatures are now such a serious threat to the viability of Scotland's native red squirrel population that they are to be controlled with a strategic cull.

Today in Perthshire, Saving Scotland's Red Squirrels (SSRS), the first nationally coordinated attempt to save native squirrels, will be launched by environment minister Mike Russell. The threeyear project run by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, Scottish Natural Heritage, the Forestry Commission Scotland and the Scottish Rural Property and Business Association, will combine culling of grey squirrels with support for landowners in managing their woodland in red-friendly ways.

Grey squirrels, which were introduced in 1876 from North America, are larger than reds, out- compete them for food, breed more and have higher juvenile survival rates. They are also carriers of squirrel-pox, to which they are immune but which kills reds within 15 days of infection.

In England and Wales, the nonnative grey has pushed the red out of large areas. Scotland is home to 75per cent of the UK's remaining population, but here too red squirrel numbers have rapidly declined - there are 121,000 reds left here compared to more than 200,000 greys. Although most of the Highlands are grey-free, the Scottish Squirrel Survey in 2007 revealed reds were lost from the central belt and that greys were penetrating further, especially in the south-west; they are also found in Aberdeenshire, northern Perthshire and Angus.

Unless action is taken, supporters of the GBP1.3m project argue, the red is likely to disappear from mainland Scotland in 30 to 50 years. "The red squirrel is one of our most beautiful and valuable native species. Therefore its loss would be unforgivable, " says Mike Russell.

But not everyone agrees. The charity Advocates for Animals sees no justification for the cull, which is expected to result in the killing of thousands of greys. It opposes the culling of one species to protect another because "it is wrong to kill animals in the name of conservation" - but does not believe this project will have the desired effect anyway.

It has published the results of a poll showing that 34per cent of Scots support a grey squirrel cull, as opposed to 54per cent opposing it.

The charity's campaigns director, Ross Minett, says: "Habitat management and developing a vaccine to the squirrelpox virus are the most viable means of cherishing all our squirrels, red and grey."

Yet Stuart Brooks, director of conservation at the Scottish Wildlife Trust, says it is "disingenuous to say there are alternative solutions to saving the red squirrel". A vaccine is under development but it is "not around the corner".

Habitat improvements are a key part of the SSRS long-term strategy, but will not tackle the immediate problem. Brooks says: "This is the last point at which we can act."

The grey squirrels will be trapped and then dispatched Embroidered Patches either by lethal injection, shooting or cranial concussion. This method - where the animal is released from the trap into a hessian sack and then killed with a single blow to the back of the head - is deemed the most humane method for rodents up to 1kg of weight under the Anima

A MAN who supplied machine guns used in nine gangland murders was jailed for life yesterday - and the sentencing judge warned that the death toll caused by his weapons could rise still further.

Replica watches

Self-taught gunsmith Grant Wilkinson, 34, was ordered to serve a minimum term of 11 years after a jury found him guilty of running a gun factory supplying lethal Mac-10 weapons to criminals.

He adapted blank-firing replicas into live-firing guns in a garden shed in Berkshire before they were sold on and used by criminals, including the gang that killed PC Sharon Beshenivsky in Bradford.

Judge Zoe Smith, passing sentence at Reading Crown Court, said: "The scale of this criminal enterprise is unprecedented in this country. Some 30 to 40 of these weapons are still unaccounted for, and regrettably, but doubtlessly, the roll call of death and serious injury will continue to rise."

Wilkinson modified the weapons in the backyard of a derelict house which he rented out to tenants as a cover for his criminality. The guns have since been linked to 52 of the 58 Mac-10 shooting incidents since 2004, when he set up his factory.

Scotland Yard is offering pounds 10,000 for anyone with information leading to Fake Chanel the seizure of 40 Mac-10s which have still not been recovered.

Wilkinson was convicted of seven offences: conspiracy to convert imitation firearms; conspiracy to sell or transfer firearms; conspiracy to sell or transfer ammunition; two counts of possession of firearms with intent to endanger life and two counts of possession of ammunition with intent to endanger life.
